There are only two hotels where you do not need to get a transfer vehicle. These are the Sofitel Heathrow at Terminal 5 and the Hilton Heathrow at Terminal 4. Needless to say these are the two most expensive hotels at Heathrow. There are no hotels in the central area of Heathrow where Terminals 1 and 3 are located. All mainstream hotels at Heathrow have cheaper rates Friday through to Sunday nights when the businessmen are away. In general the higher the grade of hotel the bigger the differential between prices mid-week and the weekend.

The passenger terminals at Heathrow are far apart from one another. Some hotels focus on particular terminals, some do not offer transfer facilities at all to certain terminals. If you are using Terminal 4 in particular do cover this point. The Heathrow airport authorities have banned hotel shuttle buses. The sole exception is the Hilton Heathrow that runs a shuttle to Terminal 5 only. The airport instead puts on Hoppa Buses that cover fixed routes between the passenger terminals and all the main hotels. Each route covers 3 or 4 hotels. The Hoppa Buses are not free, but fares are a standard flat fare for every hotel no matter how far or near it is from the airport.

Some hotels you can use public buses instead of the Hoppa Buses – many are free. Yep – free!

Don’t forget that most of the mainstream hotels rates are room only. Often there are packages which include breakfast or dinner. These can be good value as invariably hotel food and drink is expensive.

Deciding to cost out your accommodation, do try and factor in all costs including transfers and food. Sometimes rates are offered as loss leaders at the more expensive hotels and you spend more on transfers and food and drink than the hotel room. Some hotels at Heathrow are isolated where the hotel is your only option, others are near small supermarkets, pubs and places like McDonalds.

London, Heathrow Airport is not a great place as a base for visiting London. If you are tempted, the Jurys Inn Heathrow is probably the benchmark hotel being very close the London Underground station at Hatton Cross. If money is no object then the Sofitel and Hilton have access to the fast and expensive Heathrow Express trains – so think ahead.
